Men's soccer pulls off monumental upset over No. 6 UNC-Charlotte

The Elon University men’s soccer team upset No. 6 University of North Carolina at Charlotte 2-0 in a tightly contested match Saturday night at Rudd Field. The win is among the most significant in school history, and head coach Darren Powell knew how momentous the win was for his program. “It’s the first time we’ve beaten a top ten team in the country,” Powell said.

Set pieces help High Point trip Phoenix

The High Point University Panthers got two goals in two minutes on set pieces. When another Panther goal found the back of the net eight minutes later, Elon University found themselves in a hole they could not climb out of. High Point freshman forward Ben Burdon scored the eventual game-winner from five yards out in the 34th minute, helping the Panthers to a 4-2 victory over the Phoenix in both team’s season-opener. “We certainly didn’t start the way we planned on starting,” Elon coach Darren Powell said.

Irwin signs professional soccer contract with Charlotte Eagles Former Elon University goalkeeper Clint Irwin signed with the Charlotte Eagles of the United Soccer Leagues. This is the third professional organization for Irwin, who spent a preseason with Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution and 2011 with Capital City FC in Ottawa, Canada.

Balancing act: Soccer captain focuses on academics, athletics

James Carroll sings for fun, flies remote-controlled planes, develops algorithms and has received several academic awards. He is also a co-captain of the Elon University men's soccer team. A senior midfielder, Carroll is seen as a leader on and off the field by his teammates and coach. "He's very reliable," head coach Darren Powell said.

Men's soccer unable to finish off Georgia Southern

he Elon University men's soccer team will play its final home game of the season at 7 p.m. Saturday against rival UNC Greensboro. The team is coming off a loss in which it was unable to protect a 2-1 lead late in the second half and fell to Georgia Southern University 4-2 Oct.
