Elon students continue use of popular pre-workout supplement Craze despite national controversy

Put down the pre-workout — that is, if you’re using Craze. Recently, a popular pre-workout supplement, Craze, was found to contain undisclosed, illegal, amphetamine-like compounds following a USA Today investigation. Will Steele, a sophomore at Elon University who has been working out since seventh grade, accidentally took triple the recommended dosage the first time he took pre-workout. “I felt as though I could walk through a brick wall, throw a car across a state with my bare hands and still have plenty of energy to run a marathon,” Steele said.

Smith sisters energize Phoenix in 3-0 win against Campbell

The Elon University volleyball team rolled Campbell University 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-17) in its first home game of the year. Led by junior outside hitters Chanelle and Danielle Smith, the two combined for 16 points, including eight in the third set, to help the Phoenix reach 2-2 to start the season. Trailing 16-15 in the first set, a kill by senior hitter Cali Estes sparked a 10-3 Phoenix run to close out the first set.

ELN crew participates in Sports Fest

It's Elon University's 125th birthday this year and to celebrate, members of the ELN Morning crew took part in an Elon tradition that began in 1999: Sports Fest. On Friday, August 30, 73 teams took to the South Campus fields to participate in six events: dodgeball, a three-legged sack race, tug-o-war, a crossfit challenge, as well as relay and sponge races. With teams ranging from 8-10 players, nearly ten percent of the student body was registered for Sports Fest. [div class ="aligncenter"][/div] Teams traveled from event to event, battling it out for a first place finish.

A Year of Change for Men's Golf

With the start of the new season, Elon's men's golf team will lose a familiar face. After 41 years at Elon University, former men's golf head coach Bill Morningstar will retire. Senior team members John Somers and Will DiIanni said that while they will miss Morningstar, DiIanni said that Morningstar left an incredible legacy for the university. "In terms of what any coach could ask for in leaving a legacy at Elon, Morningstar has nailed it," Dilanni said. Despite Morningstar's departure, DiIanni said he is excited about the changing direction of Elon's golf team under new head coach Don Hill. [div class="aligncenter"][/div] With his arrival from the University of South Carolina, Hill brings a fresh perspective to the team. "He's not like a drill sergeant by any means," Dilanni said, "but its different from Morningstar in that he's got a very definite plan.

SGA Swears In New Sophomore Class Leaders

Elon's Student Government Association swore in three new members on Thursday to replace three sophomore class members who resigned over the summer. Former Sophomore Class Vice President Ruth Robinson, Class Secretary Natasha Schettini and Senator Conor Janda all resigned over the summer. SGA was not given reasons for their resignations, and all three refused to comment when contacted. Students Matthew Crehan, Madison Gosselin and Brittany Armstead

Third Time is a Charm: Men's Soccer Goes for a 3-Peat.

Some sports teams never make it to a championship, much less win it. But, for the Elon Men's Soccer team, winning the "big game" has become a custom. For the past two seasons, Elon finished first in the Southern Conference, most recently defeating Wofford with a 2-1 score to claim the 2012 title. The team looks for much of the same heading into the fall 2013 season. "We're feeling good about it (winning the title)," junior Goal-Keeper Nathan Dean said.

Turner Rouse, Jr., a 2012 Elon graduate and music theater major, hated going to dance classes. Now Rouse is a part of the international touring production of “American Idiot,” a Tony Award-winning musical based on the popular Green Day album.

Ask an Alum: What is the Young Alumni Council?

This piece is the first in a series of “Ask an Alum” columns that will be periodically published online through a partnership between Elon University’s Young Alumni Council and The Pendulum. As graduation approaches on college campuses each year, the all-too-common reaction for seniors is to feel that one’s college career — and one’s connection to campus and the university in general — is coming to an end. While certainly true to the extent of classes being completed and not having access to campus dining halls and meal dollars, one’s relationship to their alma mater should only strengthen, not become more distant, after graduation. In 2007, Elon University’s Young Alumni Council was created by a dedicated group of volunteers to ensure that Elon placed a proper focus on communicating and engaging with the university’s sizable and ever-growing young alumni population. Having expanded to 35 members since its humble beginnings, the Council is comprised of Elon alumni who graduated within the past 10 years.

Chicken is eliminated from Varsity menu

One of the newest changes to Elon Campus Dining that students are noticing is the new menu options at Varsity Sports Grill, or rather, what is no longer an option. Chicken sandwiches, among other items on the Varsity menu can no longer be found on the meal exchange.

Top five companies that pay interns big bucks

Every summer, many Elon students choose to work as interns across the country in order to fulfill their Experiential Learning Requirement, a mandatory program which all students must complete, prior to graduation. While a majority of internships are unpaid, 20 companies just made national news for how much they pay their interns each month, according to Yahoo!

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
