'The Black Man in America' course helps bring diverse students together in classroom

Elon University started a conversation of diversity years ago and it is still implemented now more than ever considering the state of the country. Approached two years ago by the administration, Damion Blake, assistant professor of political science and policy studies, introduced the course, “The Black Man in America,” to Elon’s curriculum last year. Police brutality towards African Americans has been a point of contention in the U.S.

Hot 2nd half leads Elon to rout of Towson

The Elon University women’s basketball team used a second half onslaught from deep to roll to an 83-55 win over Towson University Friday night in Alumni Gym. And, with the win, the Phoenix started the second half of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play with its 13th win in the last 14 games, a streak that has “I’m so excited that we came out focused and ready to handle business today,” said head coach Charlotte Smith.

Swoope's late 3 gives Elon 5th-straight win

With a wide-open look a result lightning-quick press break just a few seconds after James Madison University had tied the game, sophomore guard Dainan Swoope buried a 3-pointer that clinched the Elon University men’s basketball team fifth-straight win, a 67-61 defeat over the Dukes Thursday night in Alumni Gym. After James Madison hit two free throws to tie the game at 59 with 2:08 left, Swoope drilled the 3-pointer seven seconds later, the exclamation point to his team-high 17 points on the night, including 14 in the second half.

Football signs 14 in Cignetti's 1st class

The Elon University football team announced its 2017 signing class Wednesday, as head coach Curt Cignetti’s first touch on the program brings in 14 players. Most noticeably, both quarterbacks — Butler’s Davis Cheek and Southern Durham’s Jalen Greene — have already enrolled at Elon and started classes Monday.

CAA pulls women's golf title from NC because of HB2

The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) has made its first major move in response to North Carolina’s House Bill 2, moving its neutral-site 2017 women’s golf championship out of the state. And, while Elon University released its 2017 football schedule with a game against the State University of New York at Albany Sept. 30, Commissioner Joe D’Antonio said in a phone call that the issue is not fully resolved.

Elon highlights significance of upcoming Black History Month

Feb. 1 marks the beginning of Black History Month and this year numerous groups are working to plan events to bring Elon students, faculty and staff together to remember the month’s significance. According to Elon’s Black History Month web page, one of the main goals of the month’s activities is to promote awareness and understanding of Black experiences.

BENSON: There is still success in being single

We’ve all been there; at a busy party or reunion with family and friends, just trying to make it to the bathroom for a moment of silence when the sister of your aunt’s cousin begins lightly interrogating you and poses the question, “So, do you have a boyfriend?” Here we go again, you think to yourself. And it’s not necessarily the question that bothers you, but the answer you get, regardless of what you tell them.

Club climbing welcomes newcomers, provides off-the-wall community

Whether they're scaling 40-foot walls on ropes or tackling shorter bouldering routes, members of Elon Club Climbing say the organization is about much more than reaching the top. The club meets twice a week, traveling to climbing gyms in Greensboro and Durham, where students of all experience levels spend their evenings climbing, socializing and encouraging one another.
