Sigma Pi’s appeal denied by university, suspension upheld

Jana Lynn Patterson, associate vice president for student life and dean of student health and wellness, upheld Elon University’s suspension of Sigma Pi Epsilon-Theta for hazing after reviewing a formal appeal submitted by the fraternity and meeting with representatives from the group on Monday. Patterson’s decision adheres to the university’s original suspension of the organization until spring 2017. The 12 Sigma Pi members who lived in the Loy Center’s House A are working with Dean of Student Development Rex Waters to find alternative housing for Winter Term and the spring semester, said Smith Jackson, vice president for student life and dean of students, in a statement Wednesday.

Elon Sigma Pi Fraternity Suspended for Hazing

According to Eric Townsend, Director of Elon University News Bureau, the university has upheld the three-year suspension of Elon's Epsilon-Theta chapter of Sigma Pi. Gas leak causes shut down of Lakeside Dining

A gas leak reported at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, caused the shutdown of Lakeside Dining Hall. Elon Dining said all connections to the gas line were immediately cut off, and impacted Moseley Center, the Global Neighborhood and Koury Athletic Center. Physical Plant fixed the gas leak just before 12:30 p.m., but Elon Dining said it will not reopen for lunch this afternoon, due to inability to prepare food.

Alamance Battleground Celebrates Veterans

Preserving the past is what Alamance Battleground reenactor Bill Thompson strives to do everyday during Colonial Living History Week. Thompson has worked at the battleground for 11 years, and he started working during his junior year at Elon University. The Alamance Battleground, named after the Battle of Alamance in 1771, holds historical value because it's said that it hosted the first battle of the American Revolution. The county was named in remembrance, and the local community has since then hosted the week-long living history event to commemorate the lives sacrificed and freedoms gained from that battle. Thompson said he enjoys working there mainly because of the interactions he gets to have with those who have served on active duty. "I've talked to people that've been all over the world," said Thompson.

Elon to rely on strong guard rotation

Despite the overarching theme of what the team has lost around Elon University men’s basketball , there’s a wealth of productive guard play returning in the 2014-2015 season. Three guards who started at least 10 games a year ago and two freshmen who could be looked to for big roles will join an Elon team that lost four 1,000-point scorers to graduation. Three-point specialist junior Tanner Samson leads the pack after averaging 9.4 points per game.

Offshore wind energy offers renewable energy alternative

Limelight artist puts final touches on album

Senior Connor Whitaker is putting the final touches on an album nearly two years in the making. Whitaker is part of the Limelight Group, a student-run record label that promotes and produces artists work. Limelight provides artists like Connor with all the tools necessary to produce an album and land gigs. Senior Herbie Lutvak is Whitaker's sound engineer and producer.

Semester at Sea wellness challenge

As many of you know, I’m currently studying abroad on Semester at Sea’s Fall 2014 voyage. We recently left Barcelona, Spain to head for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — meaning we’ll be spending the next 14 consecutive days at sea. To make the most of the next two weeks, my Resident Director (SAS’s equivalent of Resident Assistant), Andrew, challenged me and everyone else on my hall to join him in participating in a 14-day wellness challenge. Andrew created a chart with 10 items (everything from floss to read for 30 minutes to write a postcard to a friend), and the goal is to do each of those items once per day.

Northeastern knocks Elon out of CAA playoffs

Coming off of Rudd Field following Elon's 2-0 defeat by Northeastern, Jason Waterman felt only one emotion: anger. Not sadness, not regret, but anger at the way he and his team played, as the Phoenix missed opportunity after opportunity and bowed out of the Colonial Athletic Association playoffs in the quarterfinal round. "There's nothing else to it, I'm pissed," Waterman said.

Election Center: Candidate profiles for the March 3 primary

Primary elections will be held March 3 in North Carolina. The Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate will be on the ballot. The winners of these races will face off in November during the general election for the open North Carolina Senate seat. Another race on the Republican ballot is Alamance County Sheriff, with incumbent Terry Johnson being challenged by two candidates. Other races for Board of County Commissioners, County Clerk of Superior Court and North Carolina Appeals Seat 1 are also on the ballot.

Candidates for dean of Student Health and Well-Being present in front of Elon community

Candidates for the next dean of Student Health and Well-Being at Elon University presented in front of the Elon community in recent weeks as part of the selection process. The position is currently held by Jana Lynn Patterson, who is retiring in fall 2026 after 40 years at Elon University. The dean will lead the HealthEU Initiative and the Boldly Elon strategic plan, while supervising departments like Counseling Services and Student Health Services. They will also manage the new 135,000 square foot HealthEU building, set to open in fall 2026.
