Duke's Muslim call to prayer brings hundreds

Hundreds gathered outside of Duke University's Chapel for the Muslim call to prayer Friday afternoon, despite the University allowing, then denying, the prayer to be broadcast across campus from the bell tower. Yesterday's prayer was amplified from a small speaker, despite Duke University officials originally announcing earlier this week that the Islamic weekly call to prayer, or the adhan, would be broadcasted from the Duke Chapel tower. Duke University officials said that the primary reason to change their previous decision was due to a "credible and serious security threat." The University had also received heavy criticism from Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Reverend Billy Graham and head of Samaritan's Purse,. At Friday's prayer, Duke students brought signs to the event to protest Duke's reversal on the decision and were not shy to voice their opinions. "I think I would voice my concern with what I feel is a unilateral decision by the administration to cancel the event without really without consulting the communities involved," second-year Duke Univeristy Divinity student, Robert Densmore said. Densmore was among many there in support of the Muslim call to prayer and held a sign reading "Let Us Worship Together." There was no visible opposition to the call to prayer before or during worship. For more on participants and Elon's reaction, tune into Elon Local News on Monday at 6 p.m.

To whom it may concern. I'd like to suggest that you cover "The Maker Movement" here in Alamance County as a story (possibly with video). My name is Ben Harris and I am the founder of the Alamance Makers Guild, director of the Burlington Mini Maker Faire, and I'm actively working to build a Maker Space for Alamance County (a shared community workshop, business incubator, social spot, store, gallery, lab, and more). For my work at community building I was chosen as one of 16 "Honored Maker Attendees" invited to the first ever White House Maker Faire last June.

From outside the bubble: Transitioning to Elon

While hundreds of freshmen were receiving acorns at convocation, first-year Cora Abdoo was far from being Under the Oaks. "I still have the acorn," Abdoo said, "but instead of saying 'I sat here with a bunch of people,' I have a more unique story." Abdoo's convocation took place on a rural field in Wyoming during the first part of her Gap Semester program. "Even though it was less traditional and less formal," she said, "I think that it was still helpful and good." Abdoo believes her trip across the country and to Costa Rica readied her for the college atmosphere. "It made me so much more prepared to go here.

It was a night filled with offensive inconsistency and a struggle for points for the Elon University women’s basketball team in its Thursday night match-up against the James Madison University Dukes. The Phoenix, coming off a four-day break, could not seem to find a way to contest the offensive output put forth by the Dukes in a 68-51 loss. “The outcome of this game could have been a lot different if we cut down on turnovers.” Head coach Charlotte Smith said.
