Elon University will kick off its Move-In Day and New Student Orientation festivities this Friday, Aug. 18. Events will last through Monday, Aug. 21 and classes will begin Tuesday, Aug. 22. After working at the University of Miami since 2012, Jennifer Strawley began her new role as Elon University’s director of athletics on Aug. 1. Strawley is Elon’s 20th director of athletics, filling the role after Dave Blank stepped down at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.

Elon University junior Katie Kapp said work at the Dragonfly Agency has drastically changed as the summer has progressed. Kapp, a participant in the Elon in Los Angeles program, said her day as a modeling agency intern — which was once spent on social media outreach and client communication — now revolves around navigating the sudden halt of the entertainment industry and rippling effects across adjacent businesses.

After their arrest in 2016 and subsequent dismissal of charges in 2018, two parties sued Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson. The lawsuit was settled July 28 for $430,000, according to court records.

During Kenneth Brown Jr.’s freshman year at Elon, he realized he wanted to use his knowledge in communications to help people. With that thought in mind — and his dislike of carrying around camera equipment — Brown switched his major from communications to human service studies, a social work degree that would allow him to follow his passions in making higher education more accessible.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed a trio of bills targeting the state’s LGBTQ+ communities; the bills would have restricted transgender students from participating in school sports, gender affirming healthcare for minors and classroom instruction surrounding gender identity and sexuality. Despite Cooper’s vetoes on July 5, these bills could still pass if they are overturned by the General Assembly.
