Elon University's accumulation of annual donations are continuing to increase and are expected to meet the national average, which is currently 8.2 percent of the alumni community.
For a recent story of mine, I covered the Destination: International event, a presentation for students to talk to other students, who are living abroad, for advice and personal experiences. I was excited to write a story on it, because my plan has always been to find a job abroad once I graduate. Being an international studies major, this has been something I've been thinking about for a long time.

A new scholarship in development will give students a chance to provide service abroad.
Writing about Sydnie Krause's incredible donation to provide students with a chance to go on an alternative spring break service trip was inspiring. She just graduated last year, and while most students focus on getting their first apartment or paying off their student loans after getting their first job, Sydnie used her money to annually give students an opportunity to spend spring break abroad with Hillel. While I eventually want to give back to Elon, I couldn't imagine doing it so quickly. With all the stresses with your first professional job, finding your first home, being in a new place, being truly on your own for the first time - I couldn't even begin to process how to donate a scholarship to school. I think its amazing that Sydnie has created another international opportunity, because it is such a good and life-changing experience. I know my experience studying abroad taught me so many invaluable things - some I expected, some I did not - and I would one day love to give a student a chance to have an incredible experience abroad like I did.
The applicants aren't the only ones competing Fellows Weekend.
My assigned article this week was to cover the planning and events surrounding Fellows Weekend. While I always knew it was an important weekend for the perspective students visiting Elon, I never realized how important it also was for Elon itself. It was described to me numerous times how important Fellows Weekend was to the admissions selection and process. One thing that I learned that suprised me the most is that those students who come to Fellows Weekend, but don't make it into the program usually end up coming to Elon anyway. That really showed me how good this weekend is for the school, and how both the parents and students fall in love with the school, regardless of making it into the program or not. It was also pointed out to me numerous times that the number of applicants, and their average grades and GPA's, have gone up this year. This really shows how Elon is becoming a more competitive and ideal school for students, which makes me proud to say that I am a student here. The competition to gain admission into this school, and the different Fellows programs, gets harder and harder every year, which always amazes me to think that if I applied to Elon today, I don't know if I would make it in.
A group of Elon University students in the International Business Club interested in working abroad have helped organize the school’s first international career conference. The event will feature speakers who have worked globally with nongovernmental organizations in international business or trade.
This week my assigned story focused on an international career conference taking place next week. I was excited to write this story because I am personally interested in working abroad after I graduate, so this fit right into my goals.
