Elon University’s Student Government Association executive board outlined its priorities for the year to the rest of SGA. SGA hosted a town hall open to Elon’s student body on Sept. 8, however, as the only students in attendance were SGA members, the executive board instead shared its plans for the year with the rest of the organization.

The Alamance-Burlington School System Board of Education voted during its Aug. 30 meeting to name a new high school, Southeast Alamance High School. The ABSS board voted 4-to-3 to name the new school, which will open for the 2023-24 academic year.

The Elon Town Council voted during the Aug. 9 regular meeting to unanimously approve the rezoning and conditional zoning request by GreenHawk development to allow the creation of Parc Northwest. This vote occurred after months of discussion between town staff, council, residents and the developers.

Dennis Riddell decided in 2012 to run for the North Carolina House of Representatives because as a father and a North Carolina resident, he said he was concerned for the direction the state was headed. Since then, Riddell has served in the state legislature and said one of the most important things he has done is helped maintain a balanced budget while reducing taxes.

Elon Town Council voted to continue the conversation regarding the rezoning request made by GreenHawk Development, a firm which plans to create a mixed use development, Parc Northwest, in Elon. This decision came during the council’s regular meeting July 12, after a month that included a neighborhood meeting, technical review committee meeting and planning board meeting, as well as a public hearing where Mayor Emily Sharpe deemed this rezoning request one of the most contentious rezoning discussions she’s been a part of.
