Elon University’s Student Government Association gave funding to three student organizations on campus during its Sept. 29 business meeting. Additionally, SGA appointed three students that were either new members joining SGA or current senators taking on additional roles.

In order to vote in midterm elections, residents of Alamance County need to register to vote prior to Oct. 14 or register in person while early voting, according to the North Carolina Board of Elections. This year, there is also a new early voting location on Elon’s campus at South Gym.

Monkeypox was declared a global health concern over the summer and on Aug. 19, Alamance County had its first case of monkeypox. This is a disease that, according to the CDC, is spread through physical contact on the monkeypox rash itself, through touching objects that have been used by someone else with monkeypox or contact through saliva.

Both within North Carolina and across the country, grocery stores are choosing to eliminate single-use plastic bags for customers. States such as New York, California and Connecticut have already implemented plastic bag bans, and earlier this summer, grocery chains Wegmans and Walmart announced plans to remove plastic bags from their stores. Rather than single-use bags, which are made from thermoplastic materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene, stores are promoting paper or reusable alternatives.

Naeemah Clark, professor of cinema and television arts, said she was moved to tears when she saw the list of faculty members involved with starting Elon’s new advancing equity initiative, centered on the addition of a four-credit course focused on racial equity. The course will first be introduced as a requirement for the class of 2027 next fall.

Elon University’s Student Government Association executive board outlined its priorities for the year to the rest of SGA. SGA hosted a town hall open to Elon’s student body on Sept. 8, however, as the only students in attendance were SGA members, the executive board instead shared its plans for the year with the rest of the organization.

The Alamance-Burlington School System Board of Education voted during its Aug. 30 meeting to name a new high school, Southeast Alamance High School. The ABSS board voted 4-to-3 to name the new school, which will open for the 2023-24 academic year.
