It’s May, and graduation is right around the corner. Before you know it, you’ll be leaving the beautiful brick archways and towering oak trees of Elon University, and pounding the pavement en route to your first job in the real world. It’s a daunting thought, but we’ve all done it, and walking through the front doors on the first day of your brand new job is a pretty exhilarating feeling. Below are some tips and tricks that helped me along the way as I navigated my way through my first week on the job.

Here’s a social experiment. Next time you’re in your dorm with suitemates, or taking a road trip with friends, grab your iPod and play “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” As Donny Osmond’s silky-smooth voice filters through the speakers, take note of how many people can recite the song without missing a single lyric (some may even add animated gestures while they sing). As long as you’re singing with fellow college students, I’m willing to bet at least half of your group will complete the song seamlessly.

The choices graduates make about where to live fresh out of Elon University shape their careers — and lives — as they are tossed into corporate America. The once–promising career is now riding on the continually changing workforce and decreasing number of jobs, thanks to modern technology and difficult economic times.

Asheville is a vibrant town that hosts a variety of things to do and places to see when visiting. You can hike the Big Fork Ridge Trail, visit the Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center and see a concert at the Grey Eagle Tavern and Music Hall all in the same day.
