Senior Alyssa Meritt remembers spending her freshman days in a repurposed storage room brainstorming ideas for a club before the pandemic hit. The brainstorming sessions soon turned into the creation of the organization Elon Maintaining Pan-Asian Respect, Equity and Social Service, also known as EMPRESS.

Every March, the Center for Race, Ethnicity and Diversity Education hosts a Multiracial Awareness Week with events centered around recognition of cultural diversity in the form of food, film and heritage. The term multiracial refers to people who identify as multiple races and transracial adoption is when a person of one race adopts a child from a different race.

Junior Jack Morrill told workshop attendees that this was to be viewed as a safe space — cameras were optional and everything was done anonymously, beginning with a grounding activity. Participants were invited to center themselves by thinking about natural spaces, clearing their minds and breathing deeply before partaking in a 90-minute Zoom call about queer identity within theater.

For the second year in a row, Alpha Omicron Pi was voted “Best Organization” at Elon University. This sorority was originally founded in 1897, and the chapter at Elon was founded in 1987. According to Alpha Omicron Pi on Phoenix Connect, their mission is to promote lifelong friendships, inspire academic excellence, lead by example and serve the nearby communities.

The one-time only performance of the original production of “Sensory Overload” is premiering tonight. Written and directed by sophomore Matthew Bobzien, this site-specific show takes audience members around campus to experience the play in real time, as if it were truly unfolding on a college campus.

Bhutanese refugee Birendra Chhetri has spent the last four years giving back to the community that gave him a new start. He arrived in the United States in 2012, having spent the previous 18 years in Nepal after fleeing the genocide in Bhutan with his family while he was still young. Chhetri now works with the same organization, Church World Service in Greensboro, to give refugees and immigrants the same work, housing and sociocultural opportunities he was given. Chhetri works to give refugees a new start.

As Thanksgiving break approaches and students prepare to travel home, Elon University students are considering whether or not to get tested for the coronavirus. Beginning on Nov. 16, Elon began providing pre-departure COVID-19 testing at no cost to students, faculty and staff.
