Elon Athletics rolled out a new visual identity Monday, shifting to the monogram "E" and Elon wordmark as its primary logo and introducing a redesigned Phoenix mascot.
The monogram — which has been a part of Elon University’s branding since 2016 — is meant to create a more direct visual connection between athletics and the rest of the university. The Elon wordmark, already familiar to fans, remains part of the identity as well.
"Our goal was to create a clearer and more unified identity for Elon Athletics," Director of Athletics Jenn Strawley said in an Elon Athletics press release. "Making the monogram 'E' and Elon wordmark our primary marks strengthens our connection to the university and gives our programs a consistent foundation.”
Elon last updated its athletics logo 10 years ago — a revised version of the Phoenix logo that was originally created in 2000, when the university shifted away from its previous mascot: the Fightin’ Christians. Now, athletics is adopting a new version of the Phoenix that gives a nod to past symbols.
The updated Phoenix mascot features a sharper, athletic character, including a forward-leaning stance, a gold sweater with an "E" that references Elon's original Fightin' Christians mascot and flame details on the shoes. Both full-body and head versions of the mascot are part of the new brand system.
“The new Phoenix mascot honors our history while giving us a fresh way to represent the energy and character of Elon Athletics,” Strawley said in a press release from Elon Athletics. “This identity embraces our present and sets our path for the future.”
Elon Athletics said sport-specific Phoenix designs are still in development and will be released in phases throughout the 2026-27 academic year.
A physical version of the new Phoenix mascot is set to debut Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the semester’s first College Coffee.
