Elon men’s basketball’s star sophomore Nick Dorn is transferring to Indiana University, he announced on social media on April 24.
Dorn was instrumental for the Phoenix these past two years as he made the CAA All-Rookie Team after a stellar freshman year that saw four CAA Rookie of the Week awards. This past season he was second on the team in points per game with an average of 15.2 and also had 3.8 rebounds per game. He was lights out from beyond the arc, leading the team in 3-pointers attempted and in 3-pointers made with 74.
Dorn sustained a lower extremity injury in mid-February and missed the final eight games of the season. The injury didn’t stop him from pursuing a new home, however, as Dorn entered the transfer portal on March 25. Almost a month later, his transfer became official after recruiting visits to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and the University of Maryland. He joins TK Simpkins, TJ Simpkins and Brayden Crump as the fourth player to officially transfer from Elon. The Simpkins brothers and Dorn made up for more than half of Elon’s points this past season.
The Phoenix have started to fill these holes in its offense, however, as it has added three guards from the portal. The additions include George Mason transfer Bryson Cokley, Northern Kentucky transfer Randall Pettus II and University of North Carolina, Pembroke transfer Ja’Juan Carr. Pettus averaged 7.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game and was efficient from beyond the arc, knocking down 37 3-pointers, second most on the team. Carr hails from a Division II squad but averaged 13.2 points per game and had a team-high 103 assists on the season.
Dorn is joining a Big-10 program, a member of a Power Four conference. Indiana just barely missed the NCAA Tournament this past season as it was the second team out of the tournament, going 19-13. Although success in recent years has been less prevalent, Indiana is a school that has built a legacy based around basketball, making the NCAA Tournament 41 times — sixth all-time. It also has won five National Championships but hasn't won since 1987. Elon has never made it to the NCAA Tournament in its Division I history.
