In a challenging matchup at Latham Park, the Elon Phoenix faced off against Charleston Southern, ending the game with a disappointing 7-2 loss. Despite showing promise in the early innings, Elon’s three defensive errors in the seventh and eighth inning cost the Phoenix the game.
The game started off with the Buccaneers scoring off a combination of a walk, a stolen base and a fly-out — which advanced a runner home. Despite this, starting pitcher Justin Mitrovich was able to hold the Buccaneers’ score after that initial hiccup, ending with 6 strikeouts.
When asked about a highlight from today’s game, head coach Mike Kennedy pointed to Mitrovich’s pitching.
“Justin’s pitching is a bright spot,” Kennedy said. “He just keeps going out there and getting those deep in games and throw the ball really, really well.”
A critical moment came in the seventh inning when Charleston Southern capitalized on a series of fielding mistakes by Elon, scoring three runs due to Elon errors. These mistakes were pivotal and allowed Charleston Southern to extend their lead significantly.
Despite the challenging game, Kennedy pointed out Jackson Alford — a junior college transfer — as another bright spot, praising his performance and attitude.
“Jackson was really a spark plug for us today,” Kennedy said. “When he gets on, a lot of things can happen, and he creates a lot of opportunities for his teammates. Opportunities for his teammates by stealing bags, being able to go first to third and things of that nature. So it's invaluable to have a guy at top that runs like that.”
Jackson Alford was praised by Elon Baseball coach Mike Kennedy for his proactive approach during the Phoenix's game against Charleston Southern on March 7 at Latham Park.
Alford’s proactive approach and solid play underlined his critical role as a momentum builder for the team.
When asked about changes to the overall gameplan for tomorrow’s meeting with the Buccaneers, Kennedy said the team will just have to be ready.
As The Phoenix looks forward to its next game, the focus will be on reducing errors and doing damage with runners in scoring positions. With a record of 6-7, the team is determined to refine their strategies and execution.
Elon’s next opportunity to tie up the series will be at their upcoming game against Charleston Southern, scheduled for 2 p.m. March 8 at Latham Park.
