Afternoon class ended early and certain campus offices closed at 3 p.m. Jan. 10 due to a winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service, according to an email from Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley.
Some campus facilities such as the Moseley Center, Student Health Services and Campus Recreation facilities will still be open throughout the evening and weekends. However some scheduling changes have been altered. The women’s basketball game against Hampton will be moved earlier to 5 p.m.. Dining halls and dining retail locations have also altered their hours which students can check on the Elon Dining website. Belk Library will also close early at 4 p.m. and will open tomorrow at 11 a.m.
As the weather continues to drop into the low 20s and 30s, snow began to reach landfall at around 3 p.m.
Dooley’s email stated that the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for central North Carolina that will last from this afternoon to tomorrow morning. There could possibly be three to four inches of snow covering Elon’s campus.
Yesterday afternoon, Dooley sent out an email asking students to move their cars by 5 p.m. today from designated parking lots such as Innovation Quad to help facilities management and Campus Safety and Police for snow removal and ice management. Dooley also advised students to not drive in unsafe weather conditions.
In an E-alert sent last night at 7:25 p.m., several accidents had been reported within the Elon area and Campus Safety and Police Chief Joe LeMire urged students to avoid any unnecessary travel.
This morning Dooley sent out another email saying the winter storm warnings have been cancelled and most campus services and facilities will continue to be open during their standard hours.
Chief LeMire was not available for immediate comment.
