The Alamance-Burlington School System Board of Education voted during its Aug. 30 meeting to name a new high school, Southeast Alamance High School. The ABSS board voted 4-to-3 to name the new school, which will open for the 2023-24 academic year.

The high school is off of Highway 119 in Haw River and will have capacity for 1,250 students. In an email to Elon News Network, Board of Education chair Sandy Ellington-Graves wrote that the vote reflected what the public wanted, and she was happy with the decision that was made. Ellington-Graves said Southeast Alamance High School was the most popular name, and ABSS staff shared that 92 people showed their support for the name in a public forum.

“The name was selected after 400+ names were suggested,” Ellington-Graves said. “The public forum yesterday afternoon began with a handout of all suggestions and small group conversation to narrow the list. I believe 12 people joined us, three being students.”

Ellington-Graves said the next steps for the public will be for students to decide on a mascot.
