Jaylan Thomas, the starting running back for Elon University’s football team each of the last two seasons, announced via Instagram that he will transfer to Samford University to continue his college football career.

Thomas played four seasons at Elon, starting the final 17 games of his career. He was the team’s leading rusher in all four of his seasons with the team and finished his Elon career with 2,083 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 56 passes for 495 yards and four touchdowns.

Jordan Bonner, Thomas’ godbrother, is currently a wide receiver for Elon. He joined the team in 2020 after transferring from Purdue University. McKinley Witherspoon was second on the team in rushing yards last season with 247 yards. He also scored six rushing touchdowns in his redshirt freshman season last fall.

Thomas will have one year of athletic eligibility remaining at Samford. The Bulldogs, Samford’s football team, are a member of the Southern Conference and went 4-7 last season.
