A day after sweeping a doubleheader, the Georgia Southern University softball team finished off a three-game sweep of the Elon University Phoenix at Hunt Softball Park, 5-2 on Sunday, March 10. The visiting Eagles, the defending champions of the Southern Conference, scored two runs in the first off of junior shortstop Kourtny Thomas’ two-run home run.

Elon countered soon after, when a passed ball situation allowed both senior catcher Camille Hill and senior left fielder Tomeka Watson to score. Both batters scored after singling, two of only four hits Elon would achieve on the day.

The Eagles took the lead for good when junior designated player Shelby Morrill hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning. An RBI single in the next frame by junior second baseman Breigh Findlay extended the lead to two runs. The Eagles scored their final run on the day in the final inning when senior first baseman Tabbly Douberley hit an RBI groundout.

In addition to Hill and Watson, junior center fielder Carleigh Nester and junior third baseman Johanna Spencer recorded hits for the Phoenix.

Junior Sarah Purvis picked up the win for the Eagles to improve to 7-6, while sophomore Chelsea White took the loss to fall to 1-3.

Overall, the Eagles leave the weekend at 14-10, 3-0 in the SoCon with the Phoenix at 9-9, 0-3 in conference.

Elon will travel to College of Charleston next weekend. The three-game series will begin with a doubleheader Saturday, March 16 at 1:00 p.m.
