Elon freshman to appear on 'The Voice'

From a nationwide pool of thousands dreaming of record deals, freshman Lowell Oakley has made the cut to advance to the blind audition portion of the NBC hit singing competition, "The Voice." According to Facebook and Twitter, Oakley will be competing in front of coaches Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams, as well as host Carson Daly. The Season 8 preview shows Oakley on the main stage, meaning he has made it past the first round of preliminary auditions to get onto the show — those began last June. He can be found in the official Season 8 preview at the 1:53 mark.

B.o.B., The Chainsmokers sound off at Elon Spring Show 2014

Torrential rainfall struck again at this year’s Spring Show, headlined by B.o.B. and The Chainsmokers, but the event planners — the Student Union Board — had to deal with an additional challenge: This year’s show was outside. Though the rainfall did not deter the show from continuing, another issue would arise SUB would not be able to handle.

Elon alumnus cast in 'Bring it On: The Musical' national tour

In kindergarten, Elon University alumnus Tyler Bertolone stood nervously on the back of the stage with his hands in his pockets in his first performance, “The Wizard of Oz.” The California native laughed while discussing his debut in theater and said “it wasn’t very impressive.” Bertolone, a music theater major, graduated from Elon in May 2013, and by November, less than six months after graduation, found out he had been cast in the “Bring It On: The Musical” national tour as Randall. “I lucked out,” Bertolone said.

Burlington’s Studio 1 is ‘So much more than real life’

The arts can provide an outlet for people to express their inner emotions, struggles and triumphs. In the words of Tami Kress, the founder of Burlington’s new Studio 1, “They allow people the opportunity to collaborate and to work together and to create.” Kress started Studio 1 in April of last year.

Rebel Wilson hosts MTV Movie Awards, solidifies Breakthrough Performance award

Rebel Wilson continued to break into the U.S. movie community Sunday night as she hosted the MTV Movie Awards. She used her on-the-spot comedy as well as her slapstick humor to open the show with a fake double nip-slip. Wilson joked that she was shocked she was asked to host the awards show and that MTV was shocked also. “They thought I was Adele,” Wilson said. Wilson used her homeland, Australia, as inspiration for one of her outfits as she carried around a stuffed koala bear that she said had x-ray vision to prank celebrities Quvenzha?e Wallis and Chris Evans. Taylor Lautner, famous for his 6-pack abs, accepted the “Shirtless Oscar” while wearing a fat stomach underneath his button up shirt.

Family ties may be familiar offstage in upcoming Elon play 'August: Osage County'

Secrets will creep around the stage April 11 in Elon University’s McCrary Theatre. In the play, “August: Osage County,” the Weston sisters’ father disappears so they return to their childhood home to support their mother, who is addicted to pills. The performance is meant to entice many of its viewers to think about what they can expect from their own family members and what dysfunction in a family might do to its dynamic. Kirby Wahl, assistant professor of performing arts and director of the play said Tracy Letts, the writer of “August,” uses a difficult family dynamic to question the nature of people’s social structure. “Everybody has their own story,” he said.
