Elon University’s Black Box Theatre recently hosted “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” the Tony-winning one-act musical about a middle school county spelling bee. While students are accustomed to the caliber of musicals at Elon, the “Bee” was not an average production. The “Bee” was an interactive musical. The audience in the show was made into the audience of the musical’s spelling bee, and was addressed as such on a number of occasions.

Many Elon students have returned from spring break and are back on campus for the second half of spring semester: a time of finishing classes and good weather. But at Elon, we have another amazing thing to look forward to this semester – the Spring Concert April 19. DJ 3LAU and rapper Big Sean will be playing music on the stage in Koury Gym for what is sure to be an awesome show.

Last week, the Class of 2016 music theater majors premiered their freshman showcase, “Let Me Be Your Star.” The show, created solely by the first-year students, acted as a debutante ball for the performers, according to freshman Ryan James Monroe, student director and cast member. He said the performance showed off the class’s capabilities.

Scott Rivera can be credited for keeping the grounds of Elon University pristine and nationally acknowledged, but his true passion lies somewhere else: performing with the Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre. Rivera, a gardener who has worked with Elon for 10 years, said he has had an affinity for the theater since his first show at age seven.

It’s no secret many students at Elon University strive for a balance between work and play, but for those in Elon’s Jazz Ensemble the 17th Annual Jazz Festival Concert was the best of both worlds. After a weekend of workshops and clinics with grade school bands, the ensemble got to perform with some special guests.

“The Vagina Monologues” has become a Valentine’s Day staple on Elon University’s campus, but the 2013 rendition was infused with an unabashed energy that heightened the performance. Sponsored by Women’s Gender Studies and Elon Feminists, the all-female cast performed for a full Yeager Recital Hall, which offered aisle seating to accommodate the overflow.

Until this year, I had never seen “The Bachelor.” Reality television shows had never sparked my interest, and as I learned, it is hard enough finding love in the real world; how likely is it that these women are going to find love with cameras in their faces? But I gave it a chance this season, which features Sean Lowe, whose love was spurned by Emily Maynard on season eight of “The Bachelorette,” and I must say this show is stranger than fiction.

Every semester, the Elon University Student Union Board is responsible for organizing activities and events for students to see, hear and do throughout the week and during the weekends. They bring musicians and comedians to campus, show movies, host game shows and provide Thursday night snacks. While SUB has its staple events the Elon campus has come to expect, the organization has been carefully working to diversify and infuse the new semester with a number of activities.

This Winter Term, diversity is the big topic of discussion and the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life is not letting a theme like this go to waste. In a three-part luncheon series called Winterfaith Lunch-N-Learn, the Truitt Center is inviting students, faculty, staff and community members to broaden their religious knowledge beyond their own faith.

If you asked the kids of today, they would probably say Topanga Lawrence is the name of some celebrity’s daughter, and “Fee-hee-hee-eeny” is a birdcall. But our generation, the children of the ‘90s, know these as references to the beloved and missed sitcom, “Boy Meets World.” For the years of our childhood, including those afternoons of reruns on ABC Family, we watched best friends Cory Matthews and Shawn Hunter get into hijinks, Cory fall in love with longtime classmate Topanga and Eric, Cory’s older brother, just be Eric.
