In terms of historical events to portray on the stage, the meeting of the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1776 seems like an unlikely first choice. A bunch of respectable, rich white men sat in a hot, dank room and decided whether to rebel or remain a colony of Britain.

A cappella shows are not a foreign concept on Elon University’s campus. Each of the five groups has concerts and small shows every semester, but junior Nick Cook, the president of Vital Signs, and the rest of the group are doing something a little different. Their next show will benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Sunday night marked the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s ceremony to commemorate outstanding work in both television and cinema. This year’s ceremony was in good hands with second-time hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.

In the world of movies, sequels can be a hit or a miss. Some, like “The Dark Knight” and “The Empire Strikes Back,” successfully build from their originals to become beloved films in their own right, while others, like the sequels of “Bring it On,” fail to bring anything new to the table. Fortunately for “Catching Fire,” the “Hunger Games” sequel that debuted this past Friday, it falls into the former category.

For students looking for a dance show they can passively enjoy, "Dancing in the Black Box" is not the show for them. This year’s show stretches the lengths of the imagination with dances that experiment with form and dancers' abilities.

Elon University’s Residence Life has been running its beginning-of-the-year mural competition for more than 20 years, but for Elon’s 125th anniversary, they decided to make a major change. For the first time since the beginning of the contest, the mural competition will be open to upperclassman participants.

Last Thursday night, McCrary Theatre at Elon University was transformed into an old school rock bar, with artificial smoke permeating the air and men in ripped concert shirts speckling throughout the room. The audience was packed with people, from young children to older community members. They were all there to see Drum Wars, starring legendary drummers and brothers Carmine and Vinny Appice.

Blogging. For a long time, this word was associated with people writing about their personal lives and airing their opinions to the Internet. It was not a writing form that got much credit. But now, as generations become more Internet savvy, people use blogging as ways to promote products and spread information in a more conversational form. Senior Steve DiCecco is one of those people.

With the fall semester quickly approaching, the art history and dance departments at Elon University are ready to show off what they have been preparing for all summer. Evan Gatti, a professor in the art history department, cites the department’s fall speaker as the major event for art history. Started in 2003 by fellow professor Kristin Ringelberg, the speaker series strives to bring contemporary art historians to campus to see what the best scholars in the field are doing.

About 1,500 new students will arrive to campus to join the Elon University community Aug. 23, and the New Student Orientation Program will be a rather enthusiastic welcome for new students. Made up of more than 100 orientation leaders and coordinators, the program is responsible for planning and executing the opening weekend activities.

Elon in Los Angeles is a nine-week program in which students of Elon University study the business of Hollywood while working at internships. As of this summer, the program encompasses production, acting, public relations and dance students. The cornerstone of the program is the final films – five seven-minute films that are entirely conceived, produced and released by Elon students.

The Elon Music Ambassadors, an ensemble that travels to high schools to show students what collegiate musical performance is like, showcased its newest performances May 6 in Yeager Hall at Elon University. This semester’s theme, Soul of the Cinema, focused on songs and melodies made famous by timeless films. Virginia Novine-Whittaker, the ensemble’s director and an Elon professor, was especially excited about this theme.

On Friday night, Elon University’s Arts West building hosted the opening of “Identity,” the senior thesis art exhibition for four seniors – Alexa Behar, Julia Caplan, Mary Peters and Jeffery Williamson. These pieces were the final product of a year’s worth of work, in which the artists had to prove their project’s merit and complete multiple pieces, only a few of which are in the final exhibition.
