Though Schar Hall is now officially open, anyone walking through the McEwen building will notice construction within the School of Communications is far from done. Two rooms in McEwen are undergoing major renovations. On the first floor, interior renovations are underway for the newsroom, the future home of Elon News Network. In McEwen’s basement, crews are constructing new studios for WSOE student radio.

Elon University alumna Gail LaRose ’64 and her daughter Michele LaRose, an Elon trustee, have made a $2.5 million gift to name a commons building for Historic Neighborhood, the only neighborhood currently without a commons building. Elon president Leo Lambert announced the gift at a Board of Trustees luncheon Oct.21 and held it at the future site of the LaRose Student Commons. The building will provide a gathering and study space for West, Sloan, Virginia, Smith, Carolina, and Hook, Brannock and Barney residence halls.

There are currently 6,008 undergraduate students at Elon University, according to the Elon Admissions website, and 3,545 of them are women. According to Breastcancer.org, one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. Applying these statistics, 443 Elon women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.

While many students at Elon University worry about which courses they’ll choose during registration each semester, a new program proposes an alternative way to spend a semester. The Design Thinking Studio in Social Innovation gives students the opportunity to forgo the traditional four-class structure and spend the time collaborating with faculty and peers on a problem-solving mission to tackle social issues. Applications for the program are now open.

Though the biggest effect of Hurricane Matthew at Elon University was heavy rain over the weekend, Jana Lynn Patterson, dean of Student Health and Wellness said that the school was prepared for an emergency situation. “You’ve got to be prepared because you don’t have a lot of time,” Patterson said. “One [of the major things to do] is to be aware of your surroundings and not to be frightened.”According to Patterson, Elon is equipped for many types of emergencies, including an armed intruder on campus or a contagious sickness such as anthrax. Hurricane Matthew was just another reminder that an emergency can be spontaneous. “There are certain things that you are going to do that are standard at any time for any kind of disaster that would be disruptive,” Patterson said. “Where are we going to house people if we can’t keep them on campus? How are we going to feed them?”Patterson said if the hurricane had hit harder, Elon was ready to feed students for up to a week. The university also secured transportation in the event of an evacuation.
