Elon sophomore Ryan Sease, one of the Merlefest attendees, grew up listening to bluegrass music with his father and fell back in love with it listening to Molly Tuttle’s cover of “Olympia, WA,” by Rancid. Since then, he’s listened to her music constantly.

Elon University alumna Rosie Darling ’18 released a new indie-pop single, “Nail in the Coffin,” on April 21, along with a music video. The song is a collaboration with Swedish alt-pop artist Boy in Space that tackles the issue of how a relationship should end and what the last interaction should be, according to Darling.

The Office of Disabilities Resources welcomes a new face this week: Monica Isbell, formerly the disability services coordinator for Alamance Community College, will now serve at Elon University as the director of disabilities resources. The change comes after longtime director Susan Wise stepped down in September 2022.

Whitley Auditorium brimmed with students, sounds and bright pink decorations as Elon sophomore Prahb Saini led Vital Signs in a set for the a capella group’s 10th annual Make-A-Wish concert Feb. 18. Once the musical mashup and intricate choreography came to an end, Saini ran off stage to continue mixing the rest of the show.

As soon as Eric Mulford graduated high school, he received his EMT certification. Shortly after that, he became a firefighter paramedic. Twenty two years later, he decided to attend nursing school at Elon University.

On Elon University’s campus, a community has grown around the number of ‘The Bachelor’ viewers, and has only grown with the premiere of its 27th season Jan. 23, where tech executive Zach Shallcross, 26, is the leading man. Shallcross had his television debut on Season 19 of ABC’s ‘The Bachelorette’ with Rachel Recchia.

For the first time since January 2020, Elon University will be holding formal recruitment for its nine Panhellenic Association sororities fully in person. Recruitment in 2022 was hybrid due to COVID-19 and was fully virtual and held during the spring semester in 2021 for the same reason. Registration for recruitment was open to undergraduate full-time female students from Nov. 28 to Jan. 9. The final number of women registered for recruitment was declined to be shared with Elon News Network by Panhellenic Association adviser Alexis Swider.

Elon’s Gender and LGBTQIA Center hosted Fall Pride Fest Oct. 27, where students and the local community could learn and celebrate various identities, play games and hang out with friends. Elon freshman Natalie Hudson, a student assistant at the GLC, said the most popular activity of the evening was tie-dyeing Fall Pride t-shirts.

Elon freshman Guillermo Vizuete didn’t know they identified as asexual until they found the label online. Vizuete, who uses he/they pronouns, said that the label seemed to “fit.”

North Carolina State Senator Valerie Foushee is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in District 4 as a Democrat and was previously elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2012. She was appointed to the North Carolina Senate in 2013 where she still serves now.
