Texas A&M sophomore quarterback Johnny Manziel has been all over the headlines this offseason. Sure, the defending Heisman Trophy winner is drawing all sorts of football-related buzz for his exciting play and ability to actually defeat the University of Alabama. But much of the press on Manziel has been directed toward his off-field adventures and mishaps.

With only two months to get rid of unwanted players and sign players needed to improve, clubs are forced to be in constant negotiations.

Spring practice has been a time of change and exploration for the Elon University football team. New players have stepped up to fill the Phoenix’s starting roles and head coach Jason Swepson has been able to see progress. The culmination of the practice and experiments was the team’s annual spring game on Friday May 3 in Rhodes Stadium. The game offered coaches and fans alike the opportunity to see the battles at arguably the two of the most important positions - quarterback and running back.
The scoring system of the annual spring game was complex, but the end result had more on the line than just improvement for the Elon University football team. While the offense technically won the scrimmage that wrapped up spring practice by a score of 61-50, the prize for the winners was free food from a local fast food chain, Cookout.
Wide receiver Aaron Mellette is now just a legend. A memory of the player who finished his Elon career with 4,254 receiving yards and 44 touchdowns and went on to get drafted by the Baltimore Ravens last weekend.
He anxiously watched as 237 other names flashed across the screen. The tension in the room was obvious. Free agency seemed inevitable. But at 6:45 Saturday evening, "Aaron Mellette, WR, Elon" finally appeared as the 238th selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.
