Since Oct. 9, 2010, Western Carolina University has played 33 football games against fellow Division I opponents. Thirty-three times since that date, Western Carolina been defeated by a fellow Division I team. Billy Bob Thorton’s character Gary Gaines said in the movie Friday Night Lights, “There ain’t much different between winning and losing.” In Elon’s 20-9 loss to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Saturday, Oct. 19, there certainly wasn’t a whole lot between the two teams. Elon’s youth was defiantly magnified as the Phoenix struggled in big situations throughout the game.

On paper, Elon University’s football loss to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga did not look like one team dominated the other. The 20-9 margin in favor of the visiting Mocs reflected a close game. So did the total offense — 322 yards for Chattanooga, 293 yards for Elon.

The “Family Weekend Folly” is in the rearview mirror. For the Elon University football team, the focus is now on Southern Conference play. With an 0-1 record in conference play — a 31-21 loss to Appalachian State University — the Phoenix is already in a hole. For that reason, this weekend’s game with Furman University is pivotal.
