According to NCStateFair.org, 929,748 people were at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh this year. The fair has rides, music and an abundance of food options. Jeff Beaver, the owner of the Old Style food stand, sells two very different food items: roasted corn and fried candy bars.

Buddhist monks visit Elon, build Sand Mandala

Elon students had the opportunity to watch two visiting Tibetan monks construct a Buddhist Sand Mandala over the course of three days last week. The monks are resident teachers at the Kadampa Center for the Practice of Tibetan Buddhism, a local Buddhist center based locally in Raleigh.

Elementary education running on love

BURLINGTON, N.C. — There was a not-so-ceremonial police escort through the neighborhoods leading up to Harvey Newlin Elementary. Six squad cars lined up outside the school. Armed officers, some with both hands glued to the right side of their hip, rushed out of their cars towards what looked like an abandoned home. Across the street from this heated scene some 800 elementary school kids were sitting on reading carpets, practicing cursive, or working on fractions in their classrooms just like any other weekday.
