University of North Carolina Chapel Hill announced July 7 it would provide free tuition for in-state students who make below $80,000 annually, while Duke University announced a similar tuition policy for in-state students who make below $150,000. These policies were made public within weeks of UNC's Supreme Court case ruling on affirmative action, in which all higher education institutions were prohibited from considering race in their admission decisions.  Graphic by Erin Martin.
