CORRECTION: A previous version of the article stated that Oliver Gold was a freshman. He is a prospective student. Elon News Network regrets this error.

Elon University’s Student Union Board hosted their second annual SUBFest on Nov. 7. Young Commons was filled with live music from students, free food and student-run businesses. Elon University's radio station WSOE 89.3 was also featured and had a station where students could paint shirts and vinyl records.

After months of planning, Elon senior and SUB’s special projects chair Caroline Reich said planning for this year’s festival felt less hectic than the year prior.

“We didn't even know what it was gonna look like when it all came together,” Reich said. “This year I felt a lot more confident. I was almost like, ‘Man, I can't believe I was so nervous about this last year’.”

Reich said this is an event made by students, for students.

Elon senior and SUB’s vice president of special events Josh Tobin said he loves seeing the community come together.

“I love seeing the people come out here and just enjoying their Friday evening,” Tobin said. “Whether they just finished class or they're coming and just hanging out with their friends. I think it's really cool just to see people having fun.”

Reich said she was the one who designed the SUBFest logo. She said her  vision for the submarine was due to the acronym for the Student Union Board — SUB.

“I just wanted there to be a cute little logo to go along with it and I've been happy to see it kind of stick around and become kind of synonymous with SUB,” Reich said.

Attendee Oliver Gold said he was most looking forward to the live music. Gold said that he was in a band back at home and loves listening to music — especially rock.

“This is great,” Gold said. “I'm really into getting out, being outside in the beautiful weather, beautiful time of day and seeing a great band. I love it.”

The student performers included Ali & Andi, Wisteria, Jocelyn Bogart, Keller Knight and Verona.

Elon sophomore and owner of Handmade by Hannah, Hannah Reeves, said  events like SUBFest allow her to sell her handmade crochet goods like beanies, coasters and stuffed animals. Funding for her business was helped by Oak Originals, an Elon initiative that supports student entrepreneurship.

“It's really awesome because this is the only way I can really, physically sell things,” Reeves said. “Seeing people come over to my table when there's good foot traffic and everything is really awesome.”

Reich said as a senior, she is glad to have started SUBFest but finds it bittersweet that this is her last year to see it all come together. She said that SUB plans on continuing to host SUBFest after Reich graduates.

“It's just kind of crazy,” Reich said. “Josh and I have been on SUB together since freshman year. So it's exciting to kind of wrap up on such a high note with such a great event that we're so proud of.”
