Elon University is expecting nearly 2,000 families and 2 to 5 inches of rain this weekend. Hurricane Ian hit the U.S. earlier today and is expected to bring rain and possible winds to campus this weekend. 

Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley said in an email to students, faculty and staff the university is excited for family weekend and based on the forecast, believes “most of the events planned will occur without disruption.” 

Assistant Director for Family Engagement Will Roberson said roughly 100 families have canceled their reservations for this upcoming weekend. 

Roberson said the Office for Family Engagement is holding safety as top priority. 

“We are telling them safety is number one and encouraging them to make best decision for their family,” Roberson said. 

Various events throughout the weekend have either been canceled or rescheduled. 

The Office for Family Engagement said there were discussions with each organization and department about rain plans for events. The decision to move inside or cancel was up to each organization.
