The Pendulum Editorial Board would like to clarify its stance from the editorial “Lasting effects: sexual assault on college campuses” from April 8th.

Our editorial was meant to initiate a dialogue about sexual assault survivors, the programs that are in place at Elon to support survivors, and how Elon could further prevent sexual assaults. However, the language of the editorial implied that such programs don’t exist, which is inaccurate.

The Pendulum has long regarded itself an ally of sexual assault survivors, with a goal of promoting as much dialogue on the topic of sexual violence as possible. As such we would like to specify what services are offered on campus.

  • A confidential advocate at the Health Center (Jessica Clark, Coordinator for Violence Response, who can be reached during business hours at (336) 278 - 5009)
  • Safeline, a confidential advocacy phone line (available 24/7 at (336) 278-3333)
  • Counseling services at the Health Center (available during business hours at (336) 278 - 7280)
  • Training on sexual violence prevention for any and all groups on campus, including student leaders, orientation leaders, RAs and professional staff, provided on request by Becca Bishopric Patterson, Coordinator of Health Promotion (who can be reached during business hours at (336) 278-7285)
  • Links at http://www.elon.edu/e-web/students/saa/ that provide information to those affected by sexual violence on reporting sexual assault, pursuing charges, receiving medical attention, and speaking with a confidential staff member
Moving forward, The Pendulum Editorial Board would like to work with the Sexual Assault and Gender Issues Council (SAGIC) to deepen the community’s awareness of the efforts that are currently underway to respond to and prevent sexual violence, and to identify areas where those efforts can be improved.
