The music director of Elon University’s Smooth Progressions a cappella group, sophomore Addison Horner, said it best.

“A good song is nothing without energy,” he said.

Energy was certainly the theme of the Smooth Progressions fall concert on Saturday night. As the newest all-male a cappella group on campus, the group attracted a decent-sized audience in Whitley Auditorium, especially considering the group was only created in February.

The impressive choreography implemented throughout the concert gave it a theatrical twist and kept the audience entertained. Rather than stay confined in a close half-circle around a microphone, the men of Smooth Progressions utilized the entire space.

In addition to all of the members jamming in their own fashion, the group came together with planned stomps and other effects, intensifying the songs at the right time.

The first song, “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, began with a solo by junior Ryan Lasnick who entered through the back of the auditorium on the first chorus. Similarly, the last song of the first half of the show concluded with the group walking down the aisles and exiting while finishing the song.

“I loved seeing so much talent and enthusiasm,” said freshman Adele Agbaw.

When Smooth Progressions performs, their hard work, experience and obvious passion for singing is plain to see.

Smooth Progressions’ six freshmen displayed their skills by performing a piece they arranged themselves. Two of those freshmen, John Osborn and Justin Vieira, said Smooth Progressions is a fun group of guys to be with and they have made the new members feel at home.

The group is diverse and each man knows how to display his own unique style on stage. Majors also varied in the organization, ranging anywhere from theater to business.

Each song was given a new flavor so it would not feel like just another cover of a popular song. They gave Miley Cyrus a run for her money with their rendition of “Wrecking Ball,” which served as their final song.

Throughout the evening, the audience responded enthusiastically to the a cappella group. People throughout the auditorium danced from their seats to the some of the songs. The group engaged the audience by encouraging everyone to sing along and clap to the music.

Smooth Progressions is planning another performance that will be later this month, the date of which be posted on their Facebook page.
