Just a few miles down the road from Elon, adults gathered on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Children's Museum of Alamance County for games, drinks and the chance to raise money for a play set.

The Children's Museum of Alamance County hosted their first adults-only fundraiser, Mallard Mania, themed for the reality show "Duck Dynasty." All the proceeds from the event went to build "My Own Backyard," an outdoor play set currently in development at the museum.

The planned expansion of the exhibit will cost $200,000 but the museum staff expects to make $50,000 from the event itself, through their car raffle, silent auction and ticket sales.

Not only was Mallard Mania a fundraiser, according to Candace King, Director of Operations at the Children's Museum, who helped plan the event, it also gave the museum a chance to try something different. "Everyday we cater to the kids and families but we thought this was a great opportunity to see how the museum can be used at nighttime maybe for rental space," King said.

Mallard Mania was also a chance for adults to explore the Children's Museum. "Sometimes they come and it's just all about the kids and they don't get to really see what we have to offer," King said. "[This event] is for adults to support the museum and get to be a kid again."

King hopes Mallard Mania won't be the last fundraiser event at the museum.

"The museum we like to consider 90 percent complete," she said. "Our outdoor exhibit space needs some work as well as our textile mill and our science adventure exhibit."

Marlow Countiss, who attended Mallard Mania, said she wanted to see the museum grow as well.

"We wanted to support the Children's Museum of Alamance County," Countiss said. "We want to see Alamance County continue to grow and continue to support families."

The museum starting developing just six years ago and according to King it still has a lot of room to grow. Once the Our Backyard Play set is finished, the museum will look to develop more spaces.

"We still have exhibits to maintain and of course add to," King said. "We have lots of potential"
