The Pendulum obtained a recording of the part of the 911 call made to Alamance Communications by Alexis Gray's parents Nov. 25. The call, placed a 11:48 a.m, was more than 11 minutes long. Click here to listen to a portion of the call.
In the call, Gray's father said he was "99 percent sure" that Gray, a student at Pennsylvania State University, was driving to Elon, where her ex-boyfriend is a student. An unidentified female voice said Gray had tried to use a credit card at the Wal-Mart in Burlington, but the card had been blocked.
"She seemed to have some information about where a credit card had been used by this woman that morning," said Dan Anderson, vice president of University Communications at Elon University. "That was evidence they had that she was heading to the campus."
Anderson said Alamance Communications notified Elon Campus Police of the situation immediately after receiving the call.Gray's ex-boyfriend notified campus security of the possibility of Gray's arrival, as well.
Campus security quickly dispatched an officer to intercept Gray as she entered campus. The officer identified Gray's vehicle based on a description provided by her parents, according to Anderson. After obtaining a search warrant, the officers searched the vehicle and discovered a rifle, ammunition and other weapons.
Gray is still undergoing evaluation. No charges have yet been filed against her, but she is likely to face felony charges of possession of a firearm on educational property, according to an email sent by Smith Jackson, vice president of Student Life.
"Everyone made some good decisions here," Anderson said. "This is a success story."
