Last year around this time, former Arts & Entertainment Editor Lauren Ramsdell sent out her weekly email with Pendulum articles for reporters to pick up. I scrolled though them, looking for one that interested me. And then … bam! Spring Show 2011: Wale, Super Mash Bros. and Neon Trees. Assignment? Interview them. It was a done deal.

Wale didn’t want to talk. Truth be told, I was scared to interview him anyway. His music intimidated me. He was out of the question and I wasn’t crying rivers over it.

Neon Trees were scheduled to call at 3 p.m. From 2:30 p.m. on, I did not move from my desk. What if they called when I was in the bathroom? Or down at the water fountain? They would never forgive me and refuse to talk and yell at me for being discourteous and I’d get in trouble and I’d have to hide in the moldy corners of Moffitt for the rest of the year and … whew. Needless to say, I stared at my phone for 30 minutes.

When they finally did call, I was beyond excited. After a minor (and by minor, I mean major) happy dance, I picked up the phone.

They were actual people. Am I the only one who finds it funny to think celebrities are actual people? I made them laugh. What? They asked me questions about the student newspaper. Double what? I was 99 percent sure this was not real life. But it was, and I thanked them profusely for their time and hung up.

The final group invited was Super Mash Bros. I met with them before the show and talked to them backstage. No lie, it was intimidating. I was momentarily whisked back to freshman year of high school. They were the “cool kids.” I was the nerd. (No quotations needed there.)

Nevertheless, they proved to be just as helpful as Neon Trees were. They answered all my questions in typical party-boy-but-nice-boy fashion. When my time with them was up, they even encouraged me to hang out with them a bit before the show started. I obviously took them up on their offer. After all, it’s not every day a freshman gets to kick back like that.
