NICE, FRANCE — Never is there as much confetti as there is during Carnaval. Parents run up to street vendors and buy dozens of euros’ worth of silly string, confetti bags and noisemakers for their children. Most buy a few for themselves, as well. The colors, the continuous upbeat techno music and the intricate floats with characteristically dark French humor mark Nice’s 128th Carnaval celebration that began Feb. 17.

My first official American Sign Language Class was this past fall. I learned the basic alphabet when I was in preschool but never in the form of language. The ASL class at Elon, like other language classes, teaches about culture. Ours focused a lot on the Mental Health side because it is also a Human Services class. The top mental health issue with deaf people is depression. They become depressed because they are isolated because it is hard to find people to talk to. If people cannot sign, a deaf person must rely on lip reading. When someone lip-reads, they only comprehend 30% of what is said. The rest is guess work. It is also very exhausting.

One of my favorite childhood memories is when my family would drop everything and go on a road trip. I loved the spontaneity of the adventure. I learned the roads after a few summer trips, how to have conversations with my family and how to occupy myself. Today, young children across the nation are not sure how to sit in a car and just look out the window.

But what is the point of offering more access to students when they aren’t taking advantage of the openness that currently exists? As much as SGA should continue to make strides in their transparency as an organization, it’s time they expect the Elon student body to meet them halfway and exhibit genuine interest in the decisions and actions of their governing body.

Accidental acceptance notifications and updates regarding false emergencies have recently plagued colleges with slip-ups in email systems. With Student Government Association elections less than a week away, Elon University students are being encouraged to support their classmates running for executive positions by exercising one of their basic rights: the right to vote.
