Senior Keiarra Bray came back from studying abroad in South Africa and felt isolated. While overseas, Bray said many locals were shocked to see her, a Black woman, sitting and talking alongside her white classmates. With institutional racial segregation taking place in South Africa until the 1990s, Bray said she was subjected to much harsher societal divisions.

In a panel of about 30 Elon University faculty members in Belk Library, computer science professor Shannon Duvall displayed instructions for how to remove a peanut butter sandwich from a VCR, written as a biblical verse in the style of the King James Bible. But, it had all been written by a bot.

Students from Elon University and visiting campuses left the three-day Ripple Conference after a weekend of interfaith discussion, speakers, and activities. The annual student-led Ripple Conference was sponsored by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and aimed to inspire interfaith students to create leaders within spiritual and religious work.

On Sunday afternoon, the Elon University women’s basketball team fell short to the Charleston Cougars on Play4Kay and Senior Day at Schar Center. After trailing by as many as 18 points late in the third quarter, it looked like Elon might finish off an improbable comeback. But the Phoenix never regained a lead after the first quarter, and it fell 60-58.

The Elon University baseball team was unable to break the tie in its weekend series against the University of Kentucky, as the Phoenix fell 4-0 to the Wildcats in the last game of the series on Sunday. After a 2-0 shutout win Feb. 17, the Phoenix couldn’t keep the momentum going through the weekend. The Wildcats turned the tables on the Phoenix and went on to win Feb. 18 5-1.

The Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational rolled on Saturday when the Elon University softball team faced off against St. Francis University on Saturday, Feb.18. Despite a late run by the Red Flash, the Phoenix held on by a final score of 4-3, and were able to pick up its second victory in the tournament. Head coach Kathy Bocock said she was happy the team could add another mark in the win column, but said there was still a lot of room for improvement.

The Elon University women’s basketball team defeated the Monmouth University Hawks Friday night by a score of 57-48, improving to 8-17 on the season and 4-10 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Phoenix constricted Monmouth offensively, forcing them to shoot 31% from the field and 13% from three.

The 2022 Colonial Athletic Association co-rookie of the year sophomore left-handed pitcher Shea Sprague stepped onto the mound of the Elon University baseball team’s Opening Day with immense confidence. Sprague would go on to pitch a strong 79 pitches over six innings, giving up zero runs and leading the team to a 2-0 win against the University of Kentucky.

The Elon University men’s basketball team, which had won five of its last six games, came into Thursday’s game against College of Charleston looking for something to help keep the momentum going against the top team in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Cougars came out hot and didn’t let up from three, making 18 of 42 attempts to win 88-66.
