At Thursday night’s SGA Senate meeting, Thomas Tiemann, Jefferson Pilot professor of economics, expressed his desire to take his urban economics class on the one-day trip to Chicago. He emphasized the importance visiting a large, diverse city when studying urban economics, and he asked the senate to consider providing an allocation to fund the trip.

Spectrum announced tonight its decision to suspend its resolution to remove Chick-fil-A from campus. Chick-fil-A declared yesterday its intention to cease its donations to anti-gay organizations, and Emily Kane, an education and advocacy chair for Spectrum, said the organization is currently investigating the claim.

On SGA Executive Vice President Connor O’Donnell’s desk, there sits a resolution. Drafted and submitted by Spectrum, Elon University’s queer-straight alliance, it opposes Chick-fil-A’s presence on campus and asserts the need for its removal. The resolution will remain on O’Donnell’s desk for two weeks to allow students to read and review it.

Elon University extended its reach into downtown Burlington with the purchase of a building at 217 E. Davis St. The building will undergo slight renovations to create office space for the Village Project and the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement’s community outreach efforts.

At Thursday night’s SGA Senate meeting, President Leo Lambert updated students about the progress of renovations on campus. He explained the expected timeline of completion, beginning with the Lakeside Dining Hall this January, followed by a portion of the new residence hall being built where Staley and Moffitt halls once stood. About 20 percent of the residence hall will open in the fall of 2013, and the remaining 80 percent will be complete by the fall of 2014, he said.

For nine weeks this summer, recent Elon University graduates learned what it’s like to live and thrive in two of the nation’s largest urban centers: New York City and Los Angeles. The Elon Bridges program, the first of its kind at the university, provided students with affordable housing and networking opportunities while they searched for jobs and settled into city life.

CHARLOTTE N.C. — The Democratic National Convention kicked off Sept. 3, and the latest Elon University Poll suggests President Obama will have to put up a strong front to secure a definite victory in this battleground state. With 43 percent of registered voters surveyed responding in favor of Obama and 47 percent in favor of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, it seems, at this point, the Republican nominee is likely to win more supporters and collect the state’s 15 electoral votes.

The North Carolina Supreme Court agreed Friday to review a North Carolina Court of Appeals ruling that North Carolina Public Records Law is not applicable to state-commissioned police departments of private universities within the state. Briefs will be filed sometime in September, and a hearing may be subsequently scheduled.

At the end of each summer, Elon University’s freshman class turns the last pages of the common reading selection, a book chosen the previous fall by a committee of professors and students. This year’s selection is “Zeitoun” by Dave Eggers, a nonfiction narrative dealing with the ever-present issues of civil rights, racism and corruption, among others.
