The definition of discrimination in the student handbook and staff manual at Elon University was modified earlier this semester to include gender identity. While the university previously did not discriminate on the basis of gender expression or identity, according to Brooke Barnett, faculty administrative fellow and assistant to the president, the phrase was added as part of routine updates to handbook and human resource policies.

A fire late Tuesday night in the Crest Apartments at Elon University has temporarily displaced 24 students living in six apartments in building 2020. The fire started when a student was cooking, according to Jana Lynn Patterson, assistant vice president for Student Life, and was put out quickly by the sprinkler system between 10 and 11 p.m. No injuries have been reported.

This week marks International Education Week, an initiative started by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education to promote international awareness. While there is no national theme, Elon University is currently celebrating by hosting almost two dozen events relating to India.

In the six years since the School of Communications at Elon University was first granted full accreditation, a lot has changed. The TV studios were upgraded to high definition and the iPad was invented and subsequently given to each faculty and staff member in the school. A graduate program was implemented and diversity increased substantially, among numerous other areas of growth.

Consent is sexy. The head nod, the squeeze of the hand, the wink. According to Elon University policy, these simple signs can't be interpreted as effective consent in the absence of a verbal, active "yes." But the charges assigned — or not assigned — to students accused of nonconsensual sexual acts don't always reflect what is mandated by university policy.

Ever wonder why stores push gift cards during the holiday season? It's not because they genuinely want everyone to choose his or her own perfect present. I was once told by a manager it's because Christmas, despite the chaos of Black Friday, BOGO sales and mad rushes for last-minute stocking stuffers, isn't really as profitable as you might think. Revenue may be high leading up to Dec. 25, but the day after Christmas brings in millions of dollars in returns and exchanges.

The Isabella Cannon Room was aglow last week as Elon University held its first Diwali celebration to mark the last day in the Hindu calendar. Diwali is also known as the festival of lights and while festivities vary from family to family, often involves singing, music, treats, colorful lanterns and fireworks. It was celebrated on campus Oct. 27.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences program (SURE) at Elon University assists dozens of students each year by providing stipends to students and faculty collaborating on intensive research projects. In previous years, the deadline for applications for SURE was set for the spring semester, around the time of spring break. This year, the deadline has been pushed up several months to Dec. 6, to help students and their faculty mentors better prepare for research.

High school guidance counselors frequently warn their students they are constantly being watched by prospective colleges via the information they post on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Although college admissions offices have started using Facebook as a tool to evaluate their applicants more frequently, Elon University's Office of Admissions is not among the list.

For the first time in its history, Elon University identified the number of first-generation college students in the incoming freshmen class. The Class of 2015 has about 89 first- generation students, defined as students whose parents did not attend college, regardless of grandparents' educational experiences.

A bench was dedicated last week in memory of Melody van Lidth de Jeude, a faculty member in the School of Communications whose death over the summer came as a surprise to the Elon community. Van Lidth de Jeude taught approximately one-fifth of the current student body through her many sections of public speaking and other courses, according to Paul Parsons, dean of the School of Communications.
