Elon University dean of students talks Student Blue, a new health insurance option coming to campus next fall

Elon University will partner with Student Blue to give students another health insurance option for the upcoming academic year, according to Dean of Students Jana Lynn Patterson. The new program will give students the option to purchase their own insurance or remain on personal coverage plans starting in the fall.

Junior Jasmine Smith toured colleges knowing she might not be able to attend a four-year university without a scholarship. She had two choices in spring 2020 — the second semester of her senior year of high school —  pay upward of $62,000 per year for the University of the Arts in Philadelphia or pay what was $51,062 per year at the time.  Despite a scholarship, Smith is paying her tuition and fees out of pocket.

Senior Keiarra Bray came back from studying abroad in South Africa and felt isolated. While overseas, Bray said many locals were shocked to see her, a Black woman, sitting and talking alongside her white classmates. With institutional racial segregation taking place in South Africa until the 1990s, Bray said she was subjected to much harsher societal divisions.

Alamance County has a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People youth council, a college division and an adult branch for the first time ever. The NAACP is a civil rights organization founded on Feb. 12, 1909. Their mission is to fight for racial equality for all people.

Former North Carolina state senator, Elon College alumnus dies

Former North Carolina Sen. and Elon College alumnus Jerry Tillman died Feb. 4 at age 82. The longtime senator died in Greensboro from natural causes, according to the Associated Press. Tillman played baseball for what is now Elon University, earning the title of honorable-mention All-American while playing for the Fighting Christians.
