Lawsuit settled against Alamance County sheriff

After their arrest in 2016 and subsequent dismissal of charges in 2018, two parties sued Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson. The lawsuit was settled July 28 for $430,000, according to court records.

Elon location of Mediterranean Deli to open six months later than expected

The Chapel Hill Fire Department responded to a call of a fire around 2:30 p.m. July 22 at the Mediterranean Deli located at 410 W. Franklin St. First responders had the fire under control by 6 p.m. that evening, and reported that 50% of the location was lost to the fire.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed a trio of bills targeting the state’s LGBTQ+ communities; the bills would have restricted transgender students from participating in school sports, gender affirming healthcare for minors and classroom instruction surrounding gender identity and sexuality. Despite Cooper’s vetoes on July 5, these bills could still pass if they are overturned by the General Assembly.

Elon University to discontinue COVID-19 quarantine protocols, reporting positive test results

For the 2023-24 school year, Elon will no longer require students, faculty and staff to report positive COVID-19 test results. According to a university-wide email sent July 10 from Jon Dooley, vice president of student life, the university’s COVID-19 responses will shift to reflect the federal emergency and World Health Organization’s declaration for COVID-19, which ended in May.

Local train schedule excludes Burlington Station from two of its routes

Elon University professor Ryan Johnson makes his way to work on Train 71 Piedmont from Durham at 7:02 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He arrives at the Burlington train station at 7:40 a.m. and then bikes the remaining four miles to Elon’s campus where he teaches classes all day.

Supreme Court rules against student loan forgiveness

Bill passes through state Senate and House that restricts transgender athletes

The North Carolina House voted 62-43 in favor of House Bill 574, the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act,” on June 22. The bill would require athletes in middle school, high school and college to only participate on teams that align with their sex assigned at birth.
