When Archie Karpeh started playing soccer as a child in his native country of Liberia, he hadn’t envisioned the large role the sport would play later in his life. Karpeh grew up a Manchester United fan, following his grandmother’s fandom, and has remained loyal to the team to this day.

Elon University will celebrate the contributions of black people throughout history during Black History Month differently this February. The Black History Month steering committee selected this year's theme, "Black History Is Everyone's History." Students, faculty and staff members from different departments and organization on campus comprise the steering committee. Senior Keyona Osborne, committee co-founder, created the committee after realizing the university hadn't promoted the celebration in the past years, she said.

It seems as if every song now has two or three remixes or has been mashed up with a different song with similar harmonies or lyrics to create an original beat and piece. From Girl Talk to DJ Earworm's catchy mashups of the year's pop songs, mashups have been popular in the past decade. Students enrolled in the Winter Term course "Mashups: Hip Hop and Electronic Dance Music" are learning how to create mashups of their own while also studying the process behind this art.

Yasmine Arrington calls herself different and lucky — and she is quite lucky. The freshman strategic communications major from Washington, D.C., is a published poet, recipient of numerous scholarships — including a $25,000 award from the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and a $30,000 scholarship from The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation — and has traveled abroad to Zambia. Arrington is also the founder of scholarCHIPS (Children with Incarcerated Parents), a nonprofit organization based in the District that offers scholarships to students in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., with incarcerated parents.

When senior co-captain right side hitter Traci Stewart tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) her sophomore year during a volleyball match against rival UNC Greensboro, she had to be pulled from the game. An MRI the following day confirmed the injury. It was her ACL. The three letters that no athlete wants to hear.

Students who often eat at Varsity Sports Grill were greeted with an addition to the menu and overall change of eating arrangements after fall break. Elon University Dining Services and Auxiliary Services launched a salad and soup bar, which has taken the space once occupied by a bar counter. This addition joins the existing soup and salad bars at 1889 Grill Room and Croutons in the Colonnades neighborhood.

Summer has officially ended and your summer clothes will soon take a back seat in the closet, if they haven't already. The rainy weather and cooler mornings have forced students to layer up and reach for comfort foods like pizza, chicken strips and mac and cheese. But the weather shouldn't be an excuse not to stay fit this fall.
