Elon’s Student Union Board hosted one of its many events this semester offering a variety of games, snacks, drinks and music Feb. 21. Though the turnout was light with around two attendees, the organization aims to build an inclusive, light-hearted space on weekend nights, channeling a place to meet new people, says Tatiana Lorich.
Student Union Board member Tatiana Lorich said that as a first-year student, what she loves most about being a part of the organization is being able to give back to her community. Lorich said watching the entire campus connect through mutual interest and fun is one of her main motives.
“Lots of girls joined because they said that they were having a hard time earlier in the year,” Lorich said. “The events that were planned by the committee before us were how they found their closest friends, so it was evidence to show that it matters.”
SUB was formally founded in 1984 to provide a diverse range of entertainment and leadership opportunities for Elon students.
Elon’s first-year student and SUB Bingo Chair, Alecks Mantell, helped organize and plan the night. She said it feels natural as she came into Elon searching for a position like this one.
“I did something similar in high school, and I was missing that aspect of my life, and I really wanted to bring it back,” Mantell said. “And now I get to do all these cool events like this!”
Though Mantell said she is aware that people love to stick to what they know, she emphasized the importance of trying new things. She said that SUB is a way to make more friendly faces around the campus.
Additionally, Mantell said she is especially excited to plan for the upcoming celebration of Elon Day on March 5. The day will showcase a variety of events, including a pop-up shop for seniors, super bingo, bracelet-making and a special visit from comedian Leslie Jones.
“It's going to be a crazy run, and I just cannot wait,” Mantell said.
