As Elon University begins Winter Term, students will see a change in the Historic Neighborhood. Mooney Building will be closing its doors starting Jan. 8 and will remain closed for the rest of the academic year and into the summer.
According to an email sent to faculty and staff by Provost Rebecca Kohn, the building will be closed for renovations. The renovations, which will start on Jan. 14, will include replacing windows on the first and second floors, replacing the HVAC system and ductwork. Kohn also wrote that part of the renovations process will include consulting with an external professional engineer about gutters, building drainage and water intrusion.
Kohn stated in the email that originally renovations were planned to occur over time, however the email did not state why the plan was changed. Now Mooney will be closed starting this Winter Term, this upcoming Spring Term and Summer 2026 with the building reopening in Fall 2026.
Mooney houses faculty and staff offices and other resources for the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education and the Center for Access and Success. The Center for Access and Success is home to local and campus initiatives like the Odyssey Scholars Program, “It Takes a Village” Project, First-Generation Student Support Services and Elon Academy.
The offices that normally reside in Mooney will now be moving to different locations around campus.
- The Dean’s Office for the School of Education and Department of Education and Wellness are now in the Atkins Conference Room in the Koury Athletic Center
- The Curriculum Resource Center and the Teaching Fellows Office has moved to the basement of Powell Building
- The Center for Access and Success has moved to McCoy Commons 212
In addition to Mooney closing, the LaRose/Mooney parking lot will also be closed during the renovation period.
According to Kohn, once renovations are complete faculty and staff will be able to return to the building.
