During the Elon Town Council’s meeting on Oct. 27, the Town of Elon made a historic purchase to relocate Elon Town Hall and the Elon Police Department to 112 Orange Drive.

Purchase of 112 Orange Drive

Members of town council went into a closed session to discuss the acquisition of the Labcorp property on 112 Orange Drive. The purpose of the purchase is to move Elon Town Hall, the Elon Police Department and provide extra space for events, according to council member Monti Allison. 

Town Manager Richard Roedner and the council agreed to purchase the land and buildings for $3 million.

Council member Randy Orwig emphasized the importance of the purchase. 

“This is probably one of the biggest things this town has done in a long time,” Orwig said.

The budget for this new acquisition was discussed as well. There were two pieces to the budget amendment: the $30,000 for a deposit to purchase 112 Orange Drive and $75,000 to hire a private company assess to the property. 

Both budget suggestions made by Roedner were unanimously approved. 

Council member Stephanie Bourland said she believes this purchase will be beneficial to the town.

“To serve our citizens in a better way because this town is gonna grow and we want to be as successful as can be to the people of Elon,”  Bourland said.

Art Advisory Committee

In addition to the purchase, there was a new appointment to the Art Advisory Committee. 

With a new seat open on the committee, Tracy Levy offered to volunteer on the board. Levy Frickery Frackery Pottery, a pottery shop in Burlington, and she is a professional ceramic artist. 

Levy said she has a lot of ideas for fun ways to keep the arts open for all residents.

Bourland said that Levy will benefit the committee. 

“It’s not only the fact that she is creative and talented, she is also adding a practical purpose to our board by talking to us about when to schedule events and when artists will have works available,” Bourland said. 

Levy was appointed to the board of the Art Advisory Committee with an immense amount of enthusiasm coming from the city council members. 

Other Items: 

Mayor Emily Sharpe announced October will be known as Native American Heritage Month moving forward in the Town of Elon. 

Halloween festivities will take place such as Trick or Treating, Truck or Treat and the final farmer’s market of the year which will take place on Oct. 30. 

Next Meeting:

The next town council meeting will be Nov. 17 and will be the only meeting of the month in November.
