Elon University’s greek life organizations came together on April 28 on Young Commons for “Greek Fest.”
The carnival-themed event was hosted by the four governing bodies of Elon University greek life: Panhellenic Association, Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and the recently established Multicultural Greek Council.
This is the Multicultural Greek Council’s first semester on campus. President of MGC, senior Edgar Ramirez, said having an event that brings MGC together with the other greek organizations is important.
“We want to show our great unity within our council, but also spread that love to the rest of the councils,” Ramirez said. “All of us coming together, showing our diversity and having all of us in the greek communities come together for an event like this to showcase through the Elon student body and campus is really important to us.”
The event had free carnival themed food such as corn dogs, popcorn, cheeseburgers, churros and funnel cake fries.
Along with the food, the event also had live music from student bands, games, crafts and an inflatable bounce house.
Ramirez said becoming a part of greek life wasn’t something he planned, but he is glad to be a part of it now.
“It's very important to me, at least, just to get MGC's name out there,” Ramirez said. “Just so we get our presence out there and we're known so not only just the people that we know, but all the student body and the staff, faculty, everyone out there.”
The vice president of community development for the Panhellenic Association, sophomore Maya Katz, said the event is meant for all students to see how the different councils can come together.
“We wanted MGC, NPHC, IFC and Panhellenic to have a coming together on a common ground, and the most visible one, which was Young Commons,” Katz said. ”And we just wanted the student body to see how much greek life loves each other.”
Katz said the four organizations were able to build strong connections throughout the planning process.
“We came to challenges together and we overcame them together and it was a real bonding experience for all of the greek councils and it was very enjoyable,” Katz said.
