The Office of the Registrar released its spring 2025 report Feb. 12, which showed the enrollment of international students decreased by 20 students compared to last year. In the spring of 2024, there were 162 international students with 142 international students this year, around a 12% decrease.

As of spring 2025, a total of 50 countries are represented at Elon according to the report. Last year, international students represented 52 countries.

In fall of 2024, the Office of the Registrar reported that the total number of first-year students accounted for 1,719 students. According to the spring 2025 report, there are 1,245 students in the class of 2028.

Jennifer Platania, associate provost for academic affairs, said the reason for the drop in first-year students between the fall semester and spring semester is because the numbers are based on credit hours. Freshmen are classified as students with 1- 29 semester hours, according to Elon’s student academic classification. Platania said this pushes some freshmen up to count as sophomores, even during their first year of study.

The report also showed a slight drop in total first-year students enrollment between spring 2024 and 2025. Last spring, 1,345 students made up the class of 2027.

The report categorizes total first-year students in two ways  -– “first time in college” and “other first year” students. “First time in college students” are students who enrolled for their first semester of college classes at Elon University in spring 2025. “Other first year” students are students classified as freshmen based on completed credit hours.

Both total undergraduate enrollment and total enrollment, including graduate students, increased according to the spring 2025 report. Total undergraduate enrollment increased by 24 students from 6,202 in spring 2024 to 6,226 in spring 2025. Additionally, total enrollment including graduate students rose by 40 students from 6,857 in spring 2024 to 6,897 in spring 2025.

Elon’s enrollment for students in North Carolina increased by 1.2% between spring 2024 and spring 2025. Additionally, students from North Carolina now represent 81 counties compared to 77 counties in spring 2025. There are 100 counties in North Carolina. North Carolina is still the most represented state at Elon with 26.2% of students calling the state home.
