United States Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at Elon University School of Law’s New Student Convocation August 5, the school announced today.

“Foxx was definitely a big catch for the school,” Andy Haile, associate dean of academic affairs for Elon Law said. “He has strong connections to North Carolina from his time with the Charlotte City Council and as the mayor of Charlotte, so we’re thrilled to have him.”

Haile said Foxx’s address will focus on the role of law in leadership, as well as transportation policies and how they relate to law practices today.

The convocation for the roughly 130 new students will take place in Whitley Auditorium on Elon University’s main campus. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. and Foxx’s remarks will take place from 11:15 to 11:30. Parking is available at the university’s Mooney parking lot on Lebanon Avenue.

Foxx has been Secretary of Transportation since 2013. He served as the mayor of Charlotte from 2009 to 2013. He graduated from Davidson College in North Carolina, where he was the first African-American student body president of the school. He previously spoke at Elon Law in 2012 at its Bryan Leadership Lecture.

The convocation will also include new students signing the Elon Law Honor Code and having each of their names announced during the ceremony. A lunch with Anthony Foxx will take place afterwards.

Previous Elon Law keynote speakers include Henry Frye, former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court in 2013 and Robert Grey, Jr., former president of the American Bar Association, in 2014.
