The Elon University women’s lacrosse team defeated Longwood University on Saturday, 10-7, thanks to Stephanie Asher’s four goals.

Asher, a freshman midfielder for the Phoenix, took a total of seven shots during the game, scoring three in the second half alone. With 2:41 to play in the first half and trailing 5-3, Elon scored two goals to tie the game at five going into the half. At the start of the second half, the Phoenix scored twice in under three minutes to give it a lead it would not relinquish.

Elon had a strong showing on offense, especially in the second half. Sophomore attacker Sloane Kessler had four assists, including assisting freshman attacker Nicole Sinacori with six seconds left in the first half to put the Phoenix back in the game. During the first half, the Phoenix had just eight shots on goal, but improved in the second half, with 13 shots and goal and 5 goals total.

Sophomore goalie Rachel Ramirez also had a solid day, allowing just seven goals and making eleven saves. Her play in the second half allowed the Phoenix to stay ahead, as she made five saves. Although she conceded five early in the game, she remained solid, allowing just two after the intermission and sealing the victory for Elon.

In the field, Elon held the edge over Longwood, fielding 22 groundballs to the Lancers’ 17. Although Longwood held the advantage on draw controls, the Phoenix capitalized on its chances with the ball to eventually take the win.

With the win, Elon moves to 2-1 overall, while Longwood falls to 0-2. The Phoenix’s next game comes on Feb. 20, when it travels to Jacksonville, Fla., to take on Jacksonville University at 7 p.m.
