Coaches have been known to get, well, a little bit tense following losses.

Each coach talks to the media in their own unique way. New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is known for being extremely short, even after wins. College basketball legend Bobby Knight was similar.

We all remember former Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green’s meltdown after a loss to the Chicago Bears. And, of course, Oklahoma State University football coach Mike Gundy’s “I’m a man! I’m 40!” rant in defending his quarterback at the time.

On Dec. 17, Southern Illinois University men’s basketball head coach Barry Hinson made his way into the national spotlight after the Salukis lost, 73-65, at Murray State University.

Hinson, whose team is now 2-8 on the year, was as animated as could be while talking to reporters after the game. At the beginning of the presser, he referred to his team as “a bunch of momma’s boys.”

Whether or not his team did not play as physical as he wanted them too, his “momma’s boys” comment could be construed the wrong way by some. That got worse when Hinson was asked about the Salukis’ rebounding performance. He began he answer with, “I’ve been telling my wife this for years, size doesn’t matter.”

That’s about as interesting as you can get in talking about basketball. Crossing the line? Possibly, but the way he acted in general may have crossed the line even more than that one simple joke.

Hinson references his wife again later in his rant, this time to criticize his shooters. In talking about how his big men made just 2 of 11 shots, he said his wife could score more than twice on 11 shots because he knows she’ll “shot fake at least one time.”

Even if his wife isn’t Lisa Leslie, I think he has a point.

What sparked that reply was when he was asked if his starting guard Marcus Fillyaw had an off game. He began with, “Off game? Yeah, Marcus had an off game. Marcus was absolutely awful. That’s about as PG-rated as I can say it.”

He ends that portion by saying his team is “uncoachable.” Hinson is in his second year in Carbondale, after spending four seasons as an assistant at the University of Kansas and nine years as the head man at Missouri State University.

For a guy with 16 total years of experience, that’s a pretty bold statement. He was extremely fired up after this loss, and that shows a sign of how frustrated he is.

At one point, he even stops to let everyone know he just received a text message. Why does that matter? Who knows.

What does matter is that Hinson, while straying from the norm a bit, truthfully spoke about how frustrating his team's play was and how desperately it needs to improve. While Murray State led most of the way, an eight point loss is surely not a blowout.

Southern Illinois athletic director Mario Moccia has reportedly spoken with Hinson since the tirade, and Hinson states his only regret as calling out Fillyaw by name.

Moccia is showing a strong sign of confidence in Hinson, a guy who turned brought a dramatic turnaround to the Salukis a year ago after a dismal 2011/2012 campaign. Whether or not these antics will bring about any sort of change now is yet to be seen.
