Elon University's Colonnades parking lot typically does not have flashing strobe lights, dancing students and Timeflies’ lead singer, Cal Shapiro, belting out selections from “The Scotch Tape” and “Pipe Dream.”

But Elon’s 125th Homecoming brought this exact scene to campus Nov. 9. Students bundled up on the brisk Saturday evening and crowded together to hear mashups of today’s most popular songs.

The student body screamed lyrics to the songs, many of whom would most likely wake up the next morning to no voice. Timeflies performed renditions of Miley Cyrus’s “We Can’t Stop,” Kanye West’s “All of the Lights” and Katy Perry’s “Roar.”  In addition to some freestyle mixes, the band also performed crowd favorites, such as “One Night,” “Swoon,” and, one of their most popular songs, “I Choose U.”

It was not rare to hear students screaming, “I choose you, Cal,” making Shapiro an obvious campus crush for the evening. The crowd increased in excitement when the swooned-over lead singer freestyle rapped about Elon. His clever lyrics referenced Acorn, the recently closed College Taphouse and Smith Jackson’s emails.

The personalized touch was immediately recorded on hundreds of cell phones.

Many students began overflowing their Facebook and Twitter with videos of the personalized rap, recording it to ensure it would be seen by those not there.

Before the concert ended, selfies with Cal exploded on students’ Instagram and Facebook with hashtags such as “Elon loves Timeflies” and “Swooning.”

Freshman Paige Pauroso snapped a picture with Cal and said she was overjoyed about the concert.

“Meeting Cal from Timeflies was such a cool experience,” she said. “He was so nice and charming and the concert was fun, too. I’m so excited I got to go."

Pauroso said she felt that the concert provided a nice change from the everyday nightlife at Elon. She said it was exciting for students to have a famous band make an appearance on campus.

“I thought SUB made a great decision to have Timeflies come,” said freshman Terrence McLaughlin. “They are certainly popular amongst college students and did an amazing job on stage.

"I’m hoping that the spring concert will be something like Timeflies. One suggestion I would make for the future is to have a longer show.”

McLaughlin has a good point. The concert lasted about an hour, leaving many of the students craving more. It’s not every day that Elon students get to go to a pop concert for free. For many attendees, the concert seemed to end not long after it began.

Some students said they would like to see similar artists like Hoodie Allen or G-Eazy perform for the Spring Concert.

It isn’t often Elon students get to spend their Saturday night in awe of on-stage fame. It seemed like most students certainly embraced the opportunity to see Timeflies and enjoyed every bit of it.
