Generally putt-putt golf is all fun and games, but that wasn't the case last week when the Burlington Putt-Putt Fun Center hosted the 54th Annual Professional Putters Association National Championship.

The Professional Putters Association has hosted miniature golf putting championships since 1959, this year Burlington Putt Putt Fun Center got the bid for the event.

"Burlington, N.C. was one of three cities across the country that asked for the national championship to be here," Joe Aboid, commissioner of the Professional Putters Association (PPA), said.

Professional putters from all across the country came out to compete at the event and it was all for a great cause.

Every PPA event is for charity and this year was no different. More than $5000 was raised for Alamance Regional Charitable Foundation.

"The charity helps citizens with medical needs and whatever things in life they have trouble paying for but still need the help, that's where the beauty of the professional putters association comes in," Matt Bellner, professional putter, said.

The organization has awarded $8 million in prize money to putters worldwide since the 1950s.

This year, Matthew McCaslin was the winner of the event and won a prize of $3000. But all players showed their skills, rarely putting anything other than holes in one.

While the championship was a nationwide tournament, many people think the event will benefit the city of Burlington.

"It was great for our city and great for this facility and we were excited and happy to host this event" Putt-Putt Fun Center owner Brian Patterson said.
